CONGRATULATIONS TO THE RECIPIENTS OF THE SPRING 2021 VAWP STUDENT RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

After reviewing the great applications received this year, we are pleased to announce that VAWP has decided to offer two student research scholarships this year as a way to reward hard work and encourage future participation. CONGRATULATIONS to MITCHELL DOYLE AND ADAM DUNN!

  1. James Mitchell Doyle

A student at Christopher Newport University pursing a Master of Science in Environmental Science

Research title: An analysis of Chamaecyparis thyoides (Atlantic White Cedar) growth rates in response to conservation efforts in Southeast VA.

This project will examine the growth patterns of Atlantic White Cedar in response to conservation and restoration efforts in what was once part of the Great Dismal Swamp, as part of efforts at the Cavalier Wildlife Management area in Southeastern Virginia.

  1. Adam Dunn

A student at Virginia Commonwealth University pursuing a Master of Science degree in Biology with a concentration in Environmental Science

Research title: Plant trait effects on tidal wetland methane emissions

Project objective is to combine gas flux and porewater measurements from pure and mixed plant communities to determine how plants drive methane production in a tidal wetlands, helping to better understand the relationship between tidal wetlands and climate change & sea level rise.

In keeping with VAWP’s mission of research and education, the recipients of this award provide a commitment to present their findings of your research at a future VAWP event. We look forward to hearing more about these projects in the future! All of us at VAWP would thank these students for their commitment to expanding our knowledge of wetland science and we wish them continued success throughout your academic career and on.
